Abstract

In order to investigate the infection control of the practicing dentists in Seoul, 300 dentists were surveyed as to the sterilization methods of the dental instruments. From 59 dentists who replied, the following results were obtained.
1. Surgical instruments were sterilized by autoclave or chemiclave in 77.6% of the practicing dentists. Other instruments like hand pieces, conservative, prosthetic, and orthodontic instruments were not autoclaved or chemiclaved as frequently as
surgical instruments.
2. Younger dentists (under 40 years old) used autoclave or chemiclave for sterilization of the surgical instruments, amalgam band retainers and hand pieces more frequently than the older generations (p<0.05).
3. Glove wearing dentists for routine dental work were 27.1% of the total. and 94.9% of the repliers had instrument piercing experience at least once a year.
4. Younger dentists (under 40 years old) used gloves and disposable apron more frequently than the older generations (p<0.05).
